  25. Common Error Messages
  26. ---------------------
  27.  
  28. 1.      DOS4GW Error:  Chunk File Error
  29.         
  30.         Problem:        Not enough files and/or buffers in CONFIG.SYS
  31.         Solution:       Edit CONFIG.SYS and change files and/or
  32.                               buffers to a minumum of 30. (NOT 30,0)
  33.  
  34. 2.      DOS4GW Error 2001
  35.  
  36.         Problem:       EMM386 is making Expanded memory (EMS) not
  37.                              Extended memory (XMS).  DOS4GW is not 
  38.                               compatible with Expanded memory (EMS.)
  39.         Solution:       Edit the CONFIG.SYS file and replace the
  40.                              word RAM with the word NOEMS.
  41.  
  42. 3.      No Mouse Driver      
  43.  
  44.         Problem:        Civil War needs a DOS mouse driver to run.
  45.                               If there is no mouse driver loaded the
  46.                               program will not run.
  47.         Solution:       Find and load the mouse software on your
  48.                              computer.  If you do not have any software
  49.                              for your mouse, call the Microsoft Customer
  50.                              Service at 1-800-426-9400 and ask for a DOS
  51.                              mouse driver for an MS-DOS based program.
  52.  
  53. 4.      No Vesa Bios Installed
  54.  
  55.         Problem:        Civil War runs in SVGA at 640x480 with 256
  56.                               colors and requires an SVGA (VESA) supported
  57.                               graphics card with 1MB of video memory to
  58.                               run.
  59.         Solution:       Find the software for your video card and
  60.                              load the VESA driver that comes with it.
  61.                              If not try downloading and running UNIVBE
  62.                              (a universal vesa driver) from "ftp.scitechsoft.com",
  63.                             "http://www.scitechsoft.com",  America Online
  64.                              or Compuserve.
  65.  
  66. 5.      Cannot allocate real mode memory for vesa info block.
  67.  
  68.         Problem1:       You are using the Matrox Millenium graphics
  69.                                card.
  70.         Solution1:      Download Vesa Bios version 1.9 from Matrox
  71.                               BBS and update video card Vesa Bios.
  72.                               Matrox:         514-685-2630
  73.                               Matrox BBS:     514-685-6008
  74.  
  75.         Problem2:       You are using Vesa support that is
  76.                                incompatible with the card or with the
  77.                                game.  
  78.         Solution2:      Try using a different vesa driver
  79.                               such as UNIVBE.

  81. 6.      No Sound
  82.  
  83.         Problem:        You are selecting the wrong sound card,
  84.                               the wrong IO,IRQ,DMA addresses or not
  85.                               loading the software required to make
  86.                               the sound card work.
  87.         Solution:       Run SETUPSND at the CIVILWAR prompt and
  88.                              reset the sound card to the proper settings
  89.                              or find and load all the software for your
  90.                              sound card.  If unsure of either consult
  91.                              your documentation or contact the manufacturer.

  93. Windows 95
  94. ----------

  96. Civil War is an MSDOS application.
  97.  
  98. If you are running Windows 95, then you should run Civil War in MSDOS
  99. mode.  To do this, go to the Start Menu, Select Shut Down, then
  100. select "Restart the computer in MSDOS mode".
  101.  
  102. You can set up an icon to run Civil War by following these
  103. instructions:
  104.   Right click on an empty part of the desktop.
  105.   Select New... Shortcut
  106.   Click on Browse
  107.   Locate the directory where you installed Civil War
  108.   Click on CIVIL.BAT or CIVILWAR.BAT and then on Open
  109.   Click on Next>
  110.   Type in "Civil War"
  111.   Click on Next>
  112.   Select an Icon from those displayed
  113.   Click on Finish
  114.   Right click on the Civil War icon that is now on your desktop
  115.   Select Properties
  116.   Click on the Program tab
  117.   Click on Advanced
  118.   Click on MS-DOS mode
  119.   Click OK
  120.   Click OK
  121. Whenever you click on the Civil War icon, the computer will
  122. automatically go into MSDOS mode.
  123.  
  124. Depending  on your graphics or sound card, you may be able to run the
  125. program without going to MSDOS mode.  However it may be slower and
  126. less reliable.

  128. Non-English Versions

  139. You can install Civil War using an alternative installation

  146. Or if you have already installed Civil War, you can use a text editor
  147. to edit INSTALL.DAT and change the line:

  157. Keyboard Shortcuts

  160. Arrow keys: Scroll the map window up/down/left/right
  161.         + : Zoom in
  162.         - : Zoom out
  163.     Space : On the Campaign Screen, toggle between resource and troop mode.
  164.    Return : On most popup boxes Return will be the same as clicking OK.
  165.    Escape : On most popup boxes, Escape will be the same as clicking CANCEL.
  166.    Escape : In other places, Escape will allow you to quit the program.
  167.    F1 and F2 : On the battle screen, selects a different unit if there
  168.                       are several units in the same place.

  170. Serial/Modem Play:

  173. You can change the IRQ settings for the comms ports by clicking on the
  174. part of the serial settings box that displays the IRQ number for the
  175. port and typing in the correct IRQ setting.  The IRQ settings and
  176. default port number are saved in a configuration file (ACW.INI) so
  177. that you only need to set it up once.

  179. If you are using a serial mouse, then the comms port that it is attached
  180. to is automatically disabled.

  183. Saved Games

  186. When you save your game position, they are saved into the same
  187. directory that you installed Civil War.

  189. If you are playing by yourself against the computer, then they will
  190. have an extension of .SAV
  191.  
  192. If you are playing against another player via Modem, Serial or IPX,
  193. then the filename will have an extension of .SV2

  196. Playing on a 4 Mb Machine
  197. -------------------------

  199. If you only have 4 Mb of memory in your machine, then a different version
  200. of the game is run, which uses less memory.
  201.  
  202. The only difference is that when you select the encyclopedia, it will exit
  203. from the main game and load up a seperate Encyclopedia program.  This means
  204. that:
  205.   - Selecting the Encyclopedia may result in a delay of a few seconds while
  206.     it is loading.
  207.   - While it loads you see a blank screen with a flashing cursor!
  208.   - The music stops and restarts when the encyclopedia is loaded.
  209.   - If you select Encyclopedia from the Realism settings screen, then when
  210.     you exit the Encylopedia you will go back to the main menu instead of
  211.     remaining at the Realism Screen.

  214. Quitting to Dos

  217. Pressing ESCAPE will give you the option to quit to Dos.  This will not work
  218. while processing the AI in a Campaign game.

  231. The lines connecting a unit with its commander can be drawn in 4 different
  232. ways to show whether they are acting indendantly from their commander.

  234. No Line: Unit is operating independantly from its commander
  235. Thin Line: Unit is attached to its commander, but has been given an
  236. ordered to be independant, which hasn't reached him yet.
  237. Thick Line: Unit is attached to its commander.
  238. 2 Thin lines: Unit is independant, but is attempting to rejoin his commander.
